REACH students may participate
in Sitka School District activities. Here is a partial list of activities:
Music and PE:
Students in grades K-12 may join a PE and/or music class. K aged students may also join SMART.
Parents of students in grades K-5 should contact the REACH office
if they are interested, and the coordinator will arrange a class time
after meeting with the music and PE teacher(s). Students in grades
6-12 should contact the counseling office to set up a class directly
with the school.
Assemblies: School
assemblies occur throughout the year. In many cases, REACH students
are invited to attend. When we learn of an assembly presentation,
we will pass that information on to you. Parents should attend assemblies
with their child unless otherwise directed.
5th grade Band:
All 5th graders are invited to participate in Band. Interest
in band should be shared with the REACH coordinator the spring prior
to your child’s 5th grade year or early in the fall of the 5th
grade year. Your child will be given a series of small placement tests
to determine the instrument that would provide your child with the
greatest amount of success.
Jazz Band:
Blatchley Middle School and Sitka High School both have jazz bands.
Students who are excelling in Band may try out for Jazz Band. Try-outs
are held in spring. Students should speak with the band teacher by
February to indicate their interest in Jazz Band and be in the loop
for try-out opportunities. Jazz Band practice usually takes place
prior to the school day.
Project Fair:
The Project Fair is geared toward students in grades 2-5.
This project fair is held in May. Students may display and share their
project during a community viewing evening. Projects completed may
be anything specific to the child’s interest: art, cooking,
quilting, science project, dance, etc.
Geography and
Spelling Bees: Geography and Spelling Bees are held by various
schools. Students who are interested in participating should voice
their interest early in the school year. This information will be
passed on to the appropriate organizers and you will be contacted
regarding participation dates, etc.
8th Grade Research

grade students must complete an 8th grade research project/paper/and
speech. This information is
shared with those
students who are 8th graders.
